The history of Peschiera del GardaPeschiera Curiosity History

Peschiera del Garda was once the site of an ancient lake-dwelling settlement. The Romans also lived in the area of lake Garda, a fact that is proven by its ancient name "Arilica". The foundations and various materials of an ancient Roman villa were unearthed during renovation of Piazza Arilicense, including interesting fragments of mosaic floors, which can still be seen next to S. Martino Church. The Lombards later named Peschiera del Garda "Piscaria" because its lake was teeming with fish.
Berengario I and Ezzelino da Romano reinforced its defensive structures. In the middle of the 16th century the fortress and town passed into the hands of the Venetians, who ordered reconstruction of the fortress according to projects by Guidobaldo da Urbino and Sanmicheli. Napoleon added two new fortresses. At the beginning of the 19th century the Austrians redesigned and expanded the fort. With Mantua, Verona, and Legnano, it became one of the strongholds of the Quadruple Alliance. After the end of the Third War of Independence (1866), Peschiera del Garda became part of the Kingdom of Italy.

He immediately prayed to the Madonna, who appeared bathed in light amidst the leaves of an ash tree. The grateful peasant knelt and gave thanks.
