The history of Torri del BenacoTorri Curiosity History

The town Torri del Benaco layout originates from Roman days when "Turrium" was an important port of call on the lake garda. In the 10th century, King Berengario had the town encircled with a wall, which still stands in certain areas. He was also responsible for building the tower beside the parish church that is considered one of the corner towers of the "Trincerò", the medieval citadel.
When the Republic of Venice ruled the area, Torri on lake Garda was the seat of the "Capitanato della riperia", which brought together the representatives of the communities between Malcesine and Lazise.

The District of Crer in Torri del BenacoTorri The District of Crer

The best way to fully enjoy the beauty of Torri del Benaco is to take a delightful walk. This one, which is quite easy and within everyone's reach, lets you admire a great variety of different scenery and settings. After S. Antonio Church, which dates back to the 15th century, you follow the "molina", the old cobblestone road which climbs through the olive and cypress trees to Coi. Many springs and the Randina valley brook provide water in any season.
Continuing along the trail which was the only road connecting the districts on the hill before the Gardesana road was built, you reach Rossone, Anze, Pandine, Cavríe and Crer, where the first families from San Zeno di Montagna settled in their search for fertile land.

The district was once an important crossroads because it was the point of departure for roads to Albisano and S. Zeno. The 18th century S. Siro Church (which holds a characteristic festival on December 9) is worth visiting: the view is one of the most fascinating.

Andrè Gide in Torri del BenacoTorri Andrè Gide

French poet and Nobel prize winner Andrè Gide (1869 - 1951) stayed at the Gardesana Hotel in Torri del Benaco from July 22 to September 13, 1948. His room - number 24 -- was the most beautiful, and its terrace afforded a fabulous view of the lake garda, the port and the castle. He was enchanted by the olives, cypress and honey locust trees, and the summer on Garda Lake enthralled him. "I have never seen such a long succession of such beautiful, splendid days... Since the beginning of September the air has been delightful and it has not been too hot at midday: the mornings and evenings are cool".
The poet rose early and took long walks, swam in the lake garda, stopped at the port to chat with the fishermen, wrote, conversed and played draughts and chess. When he left Torri del Benaco, Gide felt refreshed and left this dedication in the Town Hall: "This marvelous memory I hold so dear will give me the strength to endure the long winter".

Albisano, a Terrace on the Lake GardaTorri Albisano, a Terrace on the Lake

Albisano, an outlying district of Torri del Benaco situated 309 meters above sea level, is land of vineyards and olive groves. It can be easily reached by car: from Torri del Benaco, turn at the traffic light onto the state road. Albisano affords a marvelous view of the entire western shore: Limone sul Garda, Tremosine, Tignale, Gargnano, Mount Pizzoccolo (which is called Gu in this area and resembles Napoleon's nose), Toscolano Maderno, Gardone Riviera, the gulf of Salò and the Rocca di Manerba. It is a unique spectacle to be thoroughly enjoyed!
