Arturo Cozzaglio discovered a prehistoric site in Pieve di Tremosine at the top of the path from the port, and prehistoric objects were also found in Castello, Lis and Calvarice. The tombstone found in the bell tower of the Voltino church and now kept in Brescia is evidence of possible Etruscan settlements in the area. The tombstone, 40 x 40 cm, bears a bilingual inscription: some letters are in Latin, while others are indecipherable. Of the many tombstones from the Roman era, the one embedded in the shrine at the fork road to Ustecchio is noteworthy.
It and two large funereal urns and coins from the 1st - 2nd century A.D. were discovered at the same time. Tremosine was the object of many disputes between Brescia and Trento since the Lombard period, and a real war for its possession broke out in the second half of the 13th century. In 1426 Tremosine fell into the hands of Venice, and in 1815 it was annexed to the Lombard-Veneto Kingdom. In 1859 Tremosine belonged to the Kingdom of Sardinia, and in 1861 it became a part of the Kingdom of Italy bordering the Austrian-Hungarian Empire until 1918.
Campione di Tremosine sits on a small alluvial fan formed by the river with the same name, at the foot of the steep mountain. In 1896 Giacomo Feltrinelli promoted the construction of a cotton mill. Soon, houses for the workers, a school, a theater, and a church were built and vegetable gardens were planted. An industrial town had quickly sprung up, and the most important buildings still stand today.
When the cotton mill was closed down in 1981, the people of Campione had to invent a new economy, which turned out to be tourism. Thanks to the strong wind that blows constantly, windsurfing and sailing have been developed and attract many enthusiasts every summer.
At Vesio di Tremosine the small bed of Lake Bondo is situated behind the moraine left millions of years ago by a glacier. The lake is usually dry, and water only appears after heavy rainfalls swell the torrent running down from Nota and Tremalzo. Because there are many plant species, the Lombardy Region has turned the area into a natural reserve. You can take enjoyable hikes or go horseback riding here.
