MATISSE AND MICHELANGELO a meeting of two great artists seduced by form. Starting February 11, 2011, Artematica and Fondazione Brescia Musei will present "Matisse. La seduzione di Michelangelo", an exhibit that analyzes the relationship between the sculptures and paintings of the French artist, starting out from a study of Michelangelo's art. The works of these two artists are compared in an innovative way in this important exhibit at the Santa Giulia Museum of Brescia that takes a completely new approach in interpreting Matisse's extraordinary art.

This exhibit takes a completely new approach in interpreting Matisse's extraordinary art. Michelangelo's masterpieces were a constant point of reference for the French artist and spurred him to use color to balance lines and volumes, drawing and painting in a sculptural way.
More than 120 works of the French artist are shown in an exhibit that portrays true essence of form through a continuous comparison of paintings and sculptures that provides a simple yet effective summary - from Michelangelo's sculptures to Matisse's paintings - to achieve pure color and form. Due to its exhibition layout and location, the Santa Giulia Museum is a unique venue in Europe.

The museum is inside an ancient Benedictine convent built during the Longobard period and dedicated to Saints Salvatore and Giulia. Enlarged and remodeled over the centuries, the convent and its many constructions built over time are an admirable example of the architecture and figurative art from the early Middle Ages to the late Renaissance and beyond, with stunning archeological areas, cloisters, and frescoed chapels. Inside, the museum layout takes you on a journey through the archeology, history and art of Brescia, from prehistoric times up until today.
