The history of the Altissimo refuge

The S.A.T. inaugurated the Damiano Chiesa refuge on Nago Peak of Mount Baldo at 8:00 a.m. on June 6, 1892. From the start, the refuge proved to be too small, so it was decided to enlarge it. The renovation project got quickly underway and was completed in 1897. Other work was done between 1904 and 1906. In that period, mules were the only means of transportation: tractors and motorcycles entered the picture only in the 1950's. The refuge was opened in 1919 and named after the Trentino martyr Damiano Chiesa. The refuge was further expanded in 1941, and the new inauguration took place in September of that same year. The first car, a Fiat 600, arrived at the refuge in 1955.

The manager: Danny Zampiccoli

Danny Zampiccoli, the first Alpine Guide of the lower Sarca Valley, climbed more than 300 of the most difficult mountain peaks of the Alps between 1983 and 1998. During this intense period, he also passed the Alpine Guide exam. Danny, however, has achieved much more over the years. Among his memorable accomplishments is an unusual expedition on the Australian mountains in 1985 and another in Alaska in 1991, where he opened a direct route on Mount Dikei, the first opened by a group of Italian climbers. In 1992 Danny was in Patagonia on the Torres del Paine circuit to open the Flight of the Condor, Cerro Cathedral, and Vertical Adrenaline routes, where the North Tower antipeak was reached for the first time. In the nineties he also participated in numerous expeditions and opened many routes in Yosemite Valley in California. He also opened routes in the Lotus Flower circuit of Canada. In 1995 Zampiccoli won the "Paolo Consiglio" award (for best expedition of the year). He has been running the Altissimo Damiano Chiesa refuge on Mount Baldo since January 2000.

Overnight accommodations at the refuge and half-board (dinner with choice of menu, beverages excluded, and breakfast): 45.00 Euros per person.
