Biking itinerary on lake garda: the medieval villages

Starting out from Torri del Benaco, you'll head south to Punta S.Vigilio, where you'll take an unpaved trail on the left of the Gardesana road that leads to a white road uphill marked with the red-and-white CAI n. 41 "Crero" sign. You'll pass by mountainbike the bar and, after the road widens you'll encounter a fork in the road.

Bear right and you'll pass another bar. The road enters the forest and borders a crumbling stone wall. When you reach the junction, bear left and head towards a group of homes. Bear right on the asphalt road, which levels off and then turns into an unpaved section. The road, asphalt again, bears right and passes above a tennis court. Keep following the CAI signs. After 9 km, you'll end up on the province road for Albisano. When you come to the curve, turn left and follow the signs for Coi. You'll admire the picturesque fountains and capital, then turn left on the descending road, entering the quiet hamlet of Coi. Turn left, then right onto the Via Lombroso road. When you reach the hamlet of Rossone, take the road uphill on the right. At the next fork in the road, bear right on the steep road that descends to an intersection.

Turn left and follow the CAI signs: the biker will reach a point where water erosion has turned the road into a canal, so you'll have to get off your bike and walk for the next 100 meters. In some sections the old road is barely a trail. The itinerary follows the straight road that heads to Crero, near the bar restaurant. You'll travel 100 meters north until you meet up with the old S. Siro church, then continue on the panoramic unpaved road amidst the green olive groves. Further on the road curves, then ends on the Gardesana road. At this point, it's an easy ride back to the parking lot.

    Useful Advice:
  • Mountain hiking or trekking is an adventure and an experience that brings you in contact with the mountains and nature. Since some itineraries can be difficult for an amateur or untrained excursionist or mountain climber, caution is advised.

    Clothing:
  • Clothing must not be exaggerated and always suitable for the season, taking into account the type of excursion, altitude and weather, which can change quickly in the mountains. Bring in your backpack sunglasses, a hat, a change of clothing, waterproof jacket with hood (the change of clothing, be it heavy or light, should depend upon the season underway).

    Equipment:
  • Besides wearing the right shoes (mountain or trekking boots), bring a water bottle or another beverage, a first aid emergency kit, maps, and a Swiss Army knife.

    Safety:
  • Always notify someone of your excursion, and if you are not accompanied by family members or friends, speak with the staff at the reception desk in your residence or hotel, and let them know of your plans. Bringing a mobile phone with you during the excursion is very helpful and might come in handy.

These measures might seem extreme, but there are many potential dangers in the mountains, and you want to avoid them. In fact, it is better to be safe than sorry!
