An ancient Veneto-style rowing contest using typical Garda boats will animate the Palio delle Mura in Peschiera del Garda. The regatta is a test of stamina on a route that travels around the 16th century walls of the city: the boats compete on the canals of the "Fortress" to win the Palio. The event is a combination of folklore, sports, entertainment, history, competition and tradition amidst the bastions of Peschiera del Garda.
About twenty traditional boats called Garda gondolas with two rowers who row in the Veneto-style (standing) compete in a race from another era that is watched by hundreds of people. The public lines the route - on the towers, along the walls, on the bridges, or on the lakefront boulevard - to watch the event and cheer on their favorite crew. On Sunday, August 21, at 4:00 p.m., the crews will meet in the Mandracchio area and the procession of flag-bearers and musicians will begin.
Afterwards, the race will start at 6:30 p.m. for the Peschiera del Garda Palio delle Mura, which will begin at Porto Cappuccini and finish in the Canale di Mezzo. After the winner is announced, the event will conclude with fireworks.
